The 16 best laptop backpacks (2023): Weatherproof, sustainable, stylish

When I (Adrienne) travel to work I usually carry a Tom Bihn bag and the Synik 22 clamshell is my favorite. It has many pockets and they are all thoughtfully designed. For example, the zippered water bottle pocket isn’t on the side but in the middle of the pack so it doesn’t throw you off balance. Pen pockets are in flaps on the side rather than the center top for easy access. The exterior is made of Bluesign-certified 400 denier ballistic nylon with premium water-resistant YKK zippers. Each bag comes with a lifetime guarantee.

Because the bag is so small, the passageway at the back is only 7 inches wide—too narrow to slip over a carry-on handle. And the dense fabric and abundant hardware — the zippers, O-rings, and buckles — make it a little heavy. But with the 22-liter size, I didn’t notice the extra weight. It’s the perfect organized conference companion, but it’s on the high end of what we think is worth spending on a bag.

★ A Roll-Top Tom Bihn: The Tom Bihn Addax ($285) has become one of my favorite pieces. Roll-top bags are more versatile than zippered ones. Don’t have enough space? Unroll it and put your bike helmet inside. Too much of? Roll it down to compress space. And if you live in a rainy area, roll tops prevent water from seeping through the top zips.

Like all Tom Bihn bags, the bags are metaphysical perfection, with a huge two-way access laptop sleeve that also has a tablet pocket for my Kindle, and front pockets with O-rings for hanging keys and other small items. It has a huge luggage port and heavily padded shoulder straps. It’s also hand-sewn in the USA from PFC-free materials and carries a lifetime warranty that’s as rock solid as the ballistic nylon fabric. That’s a good thing, because at this price you only want to buy it once.
