The 2022 Video Game Awards saw many shocking and unexpected revelations, including the first clip of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which is set to be released on April 7th, 2023. The clip was presented onstage by cast member Keegan-Michael Key, who offered a very in-depth and needed discussion as to whether Toad’s mushroom cap is a hat or part of his head – the answer is yes, it’s part of his head.

The film opens with Mario (voiced by Chris Pratt) being guided through the Mushroom Kingdom by Toad to see Princess Peach. Many references to the Super Mario Bros. games can be seen, including floating blocks and moving platforms used for transportation.
For unconvinced fans of Pratt’s performance as Mario, don’t expect much from this clip as Key’s voice performance as literally every toad in the Mushroom Kingdom gets a lot of the spotlight here. The Super Mario Bros. movie features a star-studded case alongside Pratt and Key, the movie stars Charlie Day as Luigi, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, and Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong.
