Hundreds of Twitter employees are quitting after Elon Musk’s ‘hardcore’ ultimatum

Hundreds of Twitter’s remaining employees have resigned ahead of Elon Musk’s “extremely hardcore” cultural reset of the company, according to internal Slack messages from The Verge and employee tweets.

Twitter’s renewed purge of ranks comes after Musk recently fired dozens of employees who criticized or mocked him in tweets and internal messages. Musk then set a deadline of 5:00 p.m. ET Thursday for all employees to answer “yes” on the Google form if they want to stay for what he calls “Twitter 2.0”; Otherwise, today would be their last day at work and they would receive severance pay. After the deadline, hundreds of employees quickly began posting goodbye messages and greeting emojis to Twitter’s Slack, announcing that they had rejected Musk’s ultimatum.

Twitter had about 2,900 employees remaining before Thursday’s deadline, thanks to Musk, who summarily laid off about half of its 7,500 employees in its acquisition and subsequent layoffs. Remaining and departing Twitter employees told The Verge that given the scale of the layoffs this week, they expect the platform to collapse soon. One said they’ve seen “legendary engineers,” and others look up to leave one by one.

“It feels like all the people who made this place amazing are leaving,” the Twitter contributor said. “It’s going to be extremely difficult for Twitter to bounce back from here, no matter how hard the people who stay try to be.”

“I’ve been working here at Twitter for over 11 years,” wrote another on Twitter’s Slack. “In July, I was the 27th longest-serving employee at the company. Now I’m the 15th.”

“I’m not pushing the button,” another posted on Slack. “My watch ends with Twitter 1.0. I don’t want to be part of Twitter 2.0.”

“Where are all those chopped onions coming from,” read another message.
