Happy New Year! It is now 2023 and with the new year comes a chance to start fresh. Maybe it’s time for a new me without social media?
Saying goodbye to Facebook is probably easy. Most of your friends left a long time ago. However, Facebook is only one part of Mark Zuckerberg’s social networking giant Meta. And you probably use one of the other platforms… Instagram.
But deleting Instagram shouldn’t be too hard either. All these big problems that Facebook has, well, Instagram has them too: disinformation, fake followers, foreign influence campaigns, NFTs, scams, surveillance, to name a few problems.
If you want to stick to your New Year’s resolution and log off social media forever, it means it’s time to say goodbye to your Instagram account as well.
Are you ready? OK, here is how to delete Instagram from your life forever.
You cannot delete from Instagram app
First things first, if you’re looking for a delete button anywhere in your Instagram mobile app menus (you know, what most people use to browse and post on Instagram), you can stop. You cannot delete your Instagram account from the mobile app.
The only way to delete your account is to log into Instagram from your desktop or mobile browser.
Download your Instagram data first
But before we delete your account, you may want to first download your data to your own PC’s hard drive.
To do this, log into your account via the web browser and click on “Settings” (the gear icon) on your profile page. From the pop-up menu, click the “Privacy & Security” option, then click “Request Download” under “Data Download.”

Enter your email address and click the “Next” button. Instagram will email you a downloadable file with all your data within 48 hours.
Do you have your dates? Good. Now to delete your account.
Delete your Instagram account
Log in to Instagram and click this link to go to the Instagram account deletion page. Are you deleting your account due to data issues? Privacy Issues? Tell Instagram using the options in the drop-down menu.

You will then be prompted to enter your password. Just enter your Instagram password and click “Permanently Delete My Account”.
Remember! Your account will be permanently deleted from the platform along with all your photos and data. You cannot register a new account with the same username, so make sure you really want to delete your account before clicking this button.
And that’s it. You are now free from yet another social media platform operated by Mark Zuckerberg. Congratulations and a happy new year!
