CES 2023: Garmin’s LTE dashcam is always on

Garmin unveiled a new always-connected LTE dash cam at CES 2023, allowing users to check the outside view of their vehicle at any time.

There’s a small catch: you have to buy an LTE plan starting at $4.99 per month along with the Dash Cam Live Camera for $399.99. With this subscription, you can watch a 140 degree 1440p HD view from your car whenever you want. The camera also has anti-theft and other alerts. The selling point is that this gives motorists a sense of security.

“We’re excited to offer our first LTE-connected dash cam so drivers can access their vehicle camera without the limitations of a Wi-Fi connection,” said Dan Bartel, Garmin vice president of global consumer sales, in a statement. “Similar to the popular doorbell security camera systems that allow you to see around your front door, the Garmin Dash Cam Live can serve as a 24/7 eyewitness for ultimate security and situational awareness. You can feel safe whether you step off your truck at the stadium or leave your convertible on the beach.”

Users can save clips, and since the camera is always on, all incidents are automatically saved while the time and location are marked. You can also control the camera with your voice, meaning you can give commands while keeping your hands on the wheel. For example, a driver could take a still picture or save a video using voice commands.

The LTE plan seems like a relatively necessary purchase for the Dash Cam Live, as it allows for lots of bells and whistles, including live view, location tracking, and theft alerts. Not to mention the reassurance of knowing your vehicle is A-OK.
