Brittney Griner sent to penal colony, whereabouts unknown

Brittney Griner has been transferred to a penal colony in Russia to start her nine-year sentence on drug-related charges, her lawyers said on Wednesday.

The WNBA star, who was convicted in August for bringing vape cartridges containing hash oil into the country in her luggage, was transferred from the Iksha pre-trial detention center north of Moscow on Friday.

“We have no information as to their exact current whereabouts or ultimate destination,” Griner’s attorneys Maria Blagovolina and Alexander Boykov said in a statement released to the media.

Her attorneys expect that she and U.S. embassy officials will be notified by mail when Griner gets to her, whatever her final destination will be, although they warned that such notification could take up to two weeks to arrive arrives.

“Our primary concern remains the health and well-being of BG,” said Lindsay Colas, Griner’s agent. “As we work through this very difficult period where we do not know exactly where BG is or how she is doing, we are asking for the public’s support to continue to write letters expressing their love and care for her.”
