3 easy ways to improve your mood now

I sometimes write about how a good start to the day often leads to a good day in general.

A sociable, energetic, or productive start sets the stage for your day.

But some days you might not get off to a good start for some reason.

Maybe you slept badly. Or perhaps gray skies and cold autumn rain drag your energy down.

Or maybe you’ve lost that positive momentum during a tough first part of the day and after lunch you’re feeling tired, down or lost in a somewhat sad or uninspired funk.

Then what to do? Is that day lost and should you just strive for a better day tomorrow?

Well, today is not over yet…

Maybe we can make something good out of it.

This is how I do it, by breaking through the negative vibes and making a fresh start.

1. Appreciate what you have.

The simplest of my most used pick-me-ups.

I take about 2 minutes and sit in silence.

I say to myself: OK, maybe I’m not feeling so good right now, but what can I be thankful and appreciative of in my life?

Usually I can think of a simple thing like:

My delicious food. My health. That I have a roof over my head.

This one thing opens my mind. It diverts my thoughts from the negativity.

Then I build on that.

I make mental leaps from the roof, to the warmth of our home, to the clean water in the glass next to my computer, so I can work from home while it’s pouring rain outside.

I make these little mental leaps just by moving my attention around the space I’m in. As if I were jumping from stone to stone over a stream.

And I’m taking the time to slowly appreciate all of these things.

This makes my mood happier, warmer and more open.

2. Act the way you want to feel.

Emotions also work backwards.

So when I want to become more positive or enthusiastic, I act like a person who is positive or enthusiastic.

I might not feel like it. But I still do it the best I can. For example, I can:

See the task ahead of me as something exciting and fun. Answer a few emails or talk to someone positively and enthusiastically. Accept rapport if I’m feeling unmotivated, negative, or nervous before a meeting (say rapport means imagining that I’m meeting one of my best friends just before the meeting, and that puts me in the right frame of mind and headspace ).

3. Think for a minute and give someone a sincere compliment.

Here’s a fun one that I use quite often that won’t just lift my own spirits.

Spend 1 minute coming up with something that you really and genuinely appreciate about someone in your life who is in the same room as you at some point during the day.

Then give him or her whatever honest compliment you can think of.

She or he will be happy.

You will feel good and also get positive feelings from the now smiling, happy and congratulated person.

And so the mood changes for the both of you for the better.
